At 803.8 feet in length and 135.1 feet in diameter, the German passenger airship Hindenburg was the largest aircraft ever to fly. The commercial flights of Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin pioneered the first transatlantic air service. The Hindenburg was destroyed in a tragic fire on May 6, 1937 at NAS Lakehurst, claiming 35 lives.

On this ground, Capt. Reuben Randolph led the Manahawkin militia against a larger force of British loyalists commanded by Capt. John Bacon. During the action, Lines Pangborn was killed, and fellow patriot Sylvester Tilton was seriously wounded.

After searching for Capt. John Bacon, Capt. Richard Shreve and Capt. Edward Thomas stopped near Cedar Bridge Tavern. Bacon and loyalist forces surprised the militia, and the action became one of the notable Revolutionary War stories preserved in Ocean County.
