Eagleswood sits in southern Ocean County between Stafford Township and Little Egg Harbor Township, with West Creek as its best-known community. The township's small population and large amount of forest, wetland and open land give it a very different character from many of Ocean County's more heavily developed municipalities.
Community identity: West Creek is an unincorporated community within Eagleswood Township, not a separate municipality. Staffordville is another historic settlement within the township.

More Than 300 Years of Local History
West Creek is one of the older settlements in southern Ocean County. The township's historic character survives in early homes, the old Route 9 corridor, community buildings and the landscape connecting the Pine Barrens to Little Egg Harbor.
Early 1700sGervas Pharo settled in the West Creek area after moving from nearby Springfield. Early residents were drawn to fertile land, wildlife, waterways and access to the harbor.
18th & 19th CenturiesFarming, fishing, shipbuilding, timber and maritime activity shaped West Creek and the surrounding countryside. Many early homes remained along the main settlement corridors.
March 17, 1874Eagleswood Township was incorporated from portions of Stafford Township. The name is traditionally associated with eagles nesting in the area.
1890-1899Portions of Eagleswood territory were later used in the creation of Beach Haven and Long Beach Township.
