About Harmony Township
Harmony remains unmistakably rural. Farmland, woods, low-density residential roads, preserved open space and the Merrill Creek watershed dominate the landscape. There is no large traditional downtown; residents rely on scattered local businesses and nearby commercial centers for many everyday services.
Highlands community: All of Harmony lies within the New Jersey Highlands region. The Highlands Council identifies roughly 8,413 acres in the Preservation Area and 7,003 acres in the Planning Area, making land-use and water-resource protection an important part of local planning.
The reservoir and surrounding preserved land form one of the township's most important natural assets.
Harmony sits close to the Delaware River and the Pennsylvania border, with access to fishing, paddling and scenic rural routes.
Merrill Creek Reservoir
Merrill Creek Reservoir is Harmony's signature destination. The reservoir is surrounded by protected land and offers hiking, boating, kayaking, fishing, birding and nature observation. It also plays an important regional role in maintaining Delaware River flows during low-water periods.
Closing times vary seasonally. The current May 23 through Labor Day 2026 closing time is 8:00 p.m.; boat-ramp and kayak-launch closing times are earlier.
The reservoir's protected watershed provides a strong setting for walking, wildlife watching and seasonal outdoor recreation.
Fishing and permitted watercraft are popular uses. Visitors should review current reservoir rules, launch times and closures before arriving.
Harmony History
Harmony Township was incorporated April 8, 1839 from portions of Greenwich and Oxford townships. Portions were later used in the creation of Phillipsburg in 1851.
Farmsteads, barns, stone houses and long-established rural roads reflect Harmony's agricultural development.
Harmony became a separate Warren County township after a local referendum.
Part of Harmony was included when Phillipsburg Township was formed, reshaping the municipality's southern boundary.
Historic Places
Van Nest–Hoff–Vannatta Farmstead is Harmony's leading historic landmark. The remarkably intact farmstead contains an eighteenth-century stone house, an early nineteenth-century summer kitchen, a large circa-1824 bank barn and other agricultural outbuildings.
Listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places in 2005. The site received a New Jersey Historic Preservation Award in 2013 and hosts public programs during the year.
The Township commission works to preserve and interpret Harmony's historic resources and continues to seek community volunteers.
Parks, Recreation & Outdoor Life
Township recreation facilities support community sports and events. Field and pavilion use is managed through Harmony Township.
NJDEP identifies the Harmony Access Wildlife Management Area as approximately 27 acres in Warren County.
Historic public golf course founded in 1929, offering another major recreation destination within the Harmony area.
Long-established private sporting preserve on permanently protected land. Access is through the private operation, not as a public park.
The reservoir anchors Harmony's outdoor identity and offers some of the township's most accessible scenic recreation.
