Knowlton is one of Warren County's oldest municipalities, with roots predating the county itself.
Early Township History
Knowlton received a royal charter in 1763 from territory that had been part of Oxford Township, when the area was still in Sussex County. It was incorporated as a New Jersey township in 1798 and became part of Warren County when the county was created in 1824.
Later Boundary Changes
Parts of Knowlton were later used to form Hope Township in 1839 and Blairstown Township in 1845, leaving the rural western Warren County municipality seen today.

Ramsaysburg
James and Adam Ramsay settled a Delaware River tract in 1795. The hamlet grew around a tavern, store, post office, sawmill, lumberyard, blacksmith shop and other river-commerce activity. Remaining buildings date from roughly 1800 to 1870.
Village of Delaware
The Delaware village reflects Knowlton's shift from river commerce to rail and road transportation. The township Historic Commission has helped secure state and national historic recognition for Ramsaysburg and the nearby village.
