Millburn Township was created as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 20, 1857, from portions of Springfield Township. Millburn also includes the hamlet of Short Hills.

Millburn comprises the historic Wyoming district, and South Mountain and Millburn Center areas. Short Hills contains the sections of Knollwood, Glenwood, Brookhaven, Country Club, Merrywood, Deerfield-Crossroads, Mountaintop, White Oak Ridge, and Old Short Hills Estates.

The Paper Mill Playhouse

The Paper Mill Playhouse was founded in 1934. Paper was manufactured here as early as 1795. Despite fire and changing times, it continued as a mill until 1926.
In 1934 the Paper Mill Playhouse was founded and the building remodeled. The Paper Mill Playhouse was in continuous operation from 1938 until January 14, 1980, when the theatre was destroyed by fire. The newly rebuilt theatre opened on October 30, 1982 and continues to provide performing and visual arts.
