From Watnong Brook to the 2026 centennial

Morris Plains grew from early farms, mills and forges along Watnong Brook into a rail-connected community and, eventually, an independent borough formed from Hanover Township in 1926.

Early settlement

Local history identifies Lenni Lenape presence before European settlement. By the late 1600s, mill activity developed near what is now Central Avenue and Thompson Pond.

Railroad growth

The extension of the railroad through Morris Plains in 1848 accelerated development and helped establish the community's lasting transportation identity.

Borough formation

Morris Plains separated from Hanover Township in 1926. The borough is marking its centennial throughout 2026 with community programs and commemorative activities.
