Historic Northvale

Northvale's modern borough identity grew from the final remnant of historic Harrington Township, but the community's roots reach much further back.

Before 1916Harrington Township

The area was part of the much larger Harrington Township. Historical sources also record earlier local names including Neuvy and Carrieville.

1916Northvale is formed

Northvale was formed on March 15, 1916 from the remaining portion of Harrington Township; a referendum followed on April 4, and Harrington Township was dissolved.

1923Rockleigh separates

Part of Northvale was transferred to form the Borough of Rockleigh, establishing much of the municipal pattern familiar today.
