History of Oakland

1695Early settlement

Dutch associates represented by Arent Schuyler acquired roughly 5,500 acres; the settlement became known as “The Ponds.”

1748Van Allen House

The Dutch stone house became a defining landmark and later hosted George Washington.

1902Incorporation

Oakland became a borough on April 8, 1902 from part of Franklin Township.

Oakland grew rapidly as a commuter suburb while retaining wooded and river-oriented neighborhoods.

About 40 acres of passive recreation on the former Pleasureland site, with Great Lawn, pavilion, walking areas and a registered dog park.
