West Orange Safe Exchange Zone

The West Orange Police Department maintains a Safe Exchange Zone for legal in-person transactions between buyers and sellers, especially when the parties first connected online.

Police HeadquartersThe current Safe Exchange Zone is available inside the lobby of West Orange Police Headquarters at 60 Main Street.
Open 24 HoursThe Township states that the lobby exchange area is available to the public 24 hours a day and does not require an appointment.
Video RecordedTransactions in the designated exchange area are videotaped as an added safety measure.
Legal Transactions OnlyThe exchange zone is for lawful goods and transactions. Police do not authenticate merchandise, settle disputes or guarantee either party.
Consider using it: For an in-person marketplace transaction with someone you do not know, a police Safe Exchange Zone can provide a more appropriate meeting location than a private residence or isolated parking area.

For Sale Categories

Free items: Usable goods offered at no charge can be placed in the most relevant product category or under “Wanted & Free.” State clearly that the item is free and whether pickup is required.

Autos & Recreational Vehicles

Listings may include cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, recreational vehicles and lawful replacement parts or accessories. Include the year, make, model, mileage or hours when applicable, condition, asking price and title status.

Transaction reminder: NJTGO is an advertising and information platform, not a dealer, broker, inspection service or payment processor. Buyers and sellers are responsible for ownership verification, inspection, registration, insurance, recalls, taxes and lawful transfer requirements.

Garage, Yard, Moving & Estate Sales

West Orange maintains an official garage-sale permit process and publishes a current list of permitted garage sales based on applications submitted to the Planning Department.

Permit RequiredThe Township currently requires a Garage Sale Permit Application for residential garage, yard and similar sales covered by the local ordinance.
Current Permit FeeThe Township's current application lists a $25 permit fee.
Sale SignsThe application includes optional sale signs and identifies a maximum of six signs. Follow all current placement and removal requirements.
Official Sale ListWest Orange publishes current permitted garage-sale dates, addresses and hours, generally updated from permit information submitted to Planning.
Before posting your sale: Obtain any required Township permit first, then include the approved dates, hours, street or neighborhood, a rain date if applicable and a short description of featured items in your NJTGO listing.

Community Notices

Community postings may include volunteer needs, nonprofit activities, neighborhood programs, seminars, reunions, civic events and other messages appropriate for a public community page.

Official public and legal notices: As of March 1, 2026, West Orange publishes its legally required current notices through the Township's Current Legal Notices system. Ordinances, resolutions, bids, Planning Board notices and similar government notices should be verified there rather than relying on an ordinary classified posting.

Education, Tutors & Lessons

Postings may cover tutoring, music lessons, art instruction, language practice, academic support, technology help, trade instruction and other lawful educational services. Providers should identify qualifications accurately and avoid guarantees of grades, admission, certification or employment.

Independent-service clarity: Private tutors and instructors should not imply affiliation with West Orange Public Schools, another school, college or organization unless the relationship is official and authorized.

Lost & Found

Include the approximate date and area where an item was lost or found, a general description and a safe contact method. Withhold one identifying detail so ownership can be confirmed privately.

Sensitive property: Found identification, financial cards, medication, keys, weapons or potentially dangerous items should be handled through the appropriate issuing organization or local authorities rather than through a public classified exchange.

Pets & Animal Notices

Pet-related posts may include lost-and-found alerts, pet services, remembrance notices and carefully reviewed rehoming requests. Include a clear description, approximate age when known, temperament, relevant health information and a responsible contact method.

West Orange Animal Control: The Township maintains lost-and-found animal records, patrols for stray dogs and cats, investigates bites and nuisance complaints, administers licensing and rabies programs, and operates the Alex Caprio Animal Control Facility. The current Animal Control number is 973-325-4121. For after-hours animal-control emergencies, call West Orange Police at 973-325-4000.
Animal welfare: NJTGO may reject listings that appear unsafe, deceptive, commercial in nature or inconsistent with humane placement. Verify the animal, owner and arrangement before exchanging money or personal information.

Celebrations, Weddings & Milestones

Families and organizations may ask about posting birth announcements, engagements, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, milestone birthdays, reunions and similar announcements. Obtain permission before publishing another person's name, photograph or personal information.

Business Opportunities

This section may include short-term partnership requests, local vendor needs, equipment wanted, businesses seeking a specific service and other clearly described opportunities. Ongoing business promotion belongs in the West Orange Business & Shopping directory or NJTGO advertising program.

No deceptive recruiting: Listings may not use misleading income claims, pyramid-style recruitment, undisclosed fees or vague “work from home” language designed to hide the actual opportunity.

Roommates & Shared Housing

Roommate and shared-housing notices may be considered when they provide clear, lawful terms and comply with applicable fair-housing requirements. Listings must not contain discriminatory preferences based on protected characteristics.

Full housing listings: Homes for sale, full property rentals, broker services and other real-estate advertising belong on the West Orange Real Estate page.

Memorials, Funeral Notices & Remembrances

Respectful notices may include memorial messages, funeral-service information, monument information, cemetery-related notices and family-approved remembrances. Confirm dates, locations and wording before submission.

Wanted & Free

Use this section to request a specific item, seek a local service or offer useful goods at no charge. State what is wanted or available, approximate condition, whether transportation is needed and the general geographic area involved.

Classified Safety Guide

Use the Safe Exchange ZoneFor eligible in-person transactions, consider West Orange Police Headquarters at 60 Main Street instead of meeting an unknown buyer or seller at home.
Inspect before payingExamine the actual item and verify relevant documents or serial numbers instead of relying only on photographs or messages.
Reject payment tricksBe cautious about overpayments, fake checks, gift cards, cryptocurrency demands, unusual shipping arrangements or refund requests.
Protect personal dataDo not provide banking passwords, verification codes, Social Security numbers or identity-document copies to an unknown buyer or seller.
Watch for pressureStop the transaction if details change repeatedly, the price is implausible, identification cannot be verified or artificial urgency is being created.
Use official channelsFor immediate danger, suspected theft, threatening behavior or fraud in progress, contact the appropriate authorities rather than NJTGO.
