A compact borough marketplace
Wharton is small enough that a general location such as Main Street, North Main, South Main, Central Avenue, Irondale or “near Route 15” is usually enough to help another resident judge distance without publishing a private home address.

Garage & yard sales in Wharton
Wharton's municipal code regulates garage, yard, estate, rummage and similar casual sales. A Borough casual-sale license is generally required before conducting an advertised sale.
The Borough code currently sets the casual-sale license fee at $5.
A license is generally limited to two sales for the same person and location within a twelve-month period.
A licensed sale may run for no more than three consecutive calendar days, subject to the Borough's rain-day provisions.
Casual sales may be conducted only between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
Signs and prohibited items matter.
Wharton's code prohibits attaching garage-sale signs to utility poles. It also specifically prohibits home sales of food items and mattresses under the garage-and-yard-sale chapter.
Wharton's annual town-wide garage sale is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026. Participating residents register through the Borough so shoppers can use the official sale information when it is published.
The code allows one additional sale license within a twelve-month period when a resident is preparing to move from the Borough and the sale is held within 90 days of the expected move.
The garage-sale chapter includes an exception for advertising five or fewer specifically named personal-property items, but residents should check the current code or Borough Clerk when unsure whether a license is required.
Lost pets & animal notices
A community post can help reunite a lost pet, but owners should also use Wharton's official municipal animal and health channels.
Dogs and cats over six months old must be licensed in Wharton. Licenses are renewed annually in January and require current rabies documentation.
Wharton contracts with Mount Olive Township for health services, while Wharton continues to handle animal licensing and local records.

How to prepare a useful classified
“Solid oak dining table — North Main area” is more useful than simply “For sale.”
Include condition, size, age, quantity, model and important defects or missing parts.
Use a general Wharton location rather than publishing an exact home address.
State an asking price, “free,” “wanted,” or whether reasonable offers will be considered.
Provide only the contact method needed to arrange the transaction.
Once an item is sold, found or no longer available, ask NJTGO to remove the listing.
What NJTGO classifieds will not accept
To keep the marketplace appropriate for a local town-guide audience, NJTGO may reject, edit or remove listings that are unsafe, unlawful, deceptive or better suited to another section.

Submitting a Wharton classified
A useful submission should include a concise title, category, accurate description, general Wharton location, asking price if applicable and a safe contact method. Yard-sale notices should also include dates, hours and rain information.
Give enough detail for another resident to decide whether the item or notice is relevant.
The listing should have a genuine Wharton connection and should not be bulk commercial advertising disguised as a personal post.
Tell NJTGO when an item is sold, a pet is found or a notice has expired.
