Camp Merritt Memorial & World War I history
Camp Merritt covered roughly 770 acres across Cresskill and neighboring communities during World War I. More than one million soldiers passed through the camp on their way to and from Europe, making it one of the region's most consequential military sites.
A 65-foot granite obelisk at Knickerbocker Road and Madison Avenue commemorates the camp and the soldiers who passed through it. The monument was dedicated in 1924.
