Dumont Visiting & Lodging

Dumont is best approached as a community, recreation and local-history stop rather than a conventional hotel destination. The borough's parks, library, seasonal events, food scene and Camp Merritt connection make it useful for a relaxed Bergen County day visit.

Visitors who need overnight lodging can use nearby Tenafly and Teaneck hotels while exploring Dumont and the surrounding Northern Valley.

Dumont & Camp Merritt

Dumont's modern growth was shaped first by the railroad and then by Camp Merritt. The huge World War I embarkation camp was established in 1917 along Dumont's eastern border, bringing soldiers, temporary businesses and camp-supply rail lines into the area.

Schraalenburgh roots

The borough was incorporated as Schraalenburgh in 1894 before becoming Dumont in 1898.

World War I

Camp Merritt extended through portions of present-day Dumont and neighboring communities and processed more than one million soldiers.

Camp Merritt Memorial

The surviving monument is nearby in Cresskill at Knickerbocker Road and Madison Avenue, making it an easy companion stop.
