Dumont & Camp Merritt
Dumont's modern growth was shaped first by the railroad and then by Camp Merritt. The huge World War I embarkation camp was established in 1917 along Dumont's eastern border, bringing soldiers, temporary businesses and camp-supply rail lines into the area.
The borough was incorporated as Schraalenburgh in 1894 before becoming Dumont in 1898.
Camp Merritt extended through portions of present-day Dumont and neighboring communities and processed more than one million soldiers.
The surviving monument is nearby in Cresskill at Knickerbocker Road and Madison Avenue, making it an easy companion stop.
