From Dundee Lake to Elmwood Park
The area was known as Dundee Lake and formed part of Saddle River Township.
Residents voted on April 18, 1916 to separate from Saddle River Township and form the Borough of East Paterson.
The Rosemont section of Saddle River Township voted to join East Paterson.
Large residential development, garden apartments and new schools transformed the borough after World War II.
Existing Routes 4 and 46 were joined by Interstate 80 and the Garden State Parkway, reshaping travel and commerce.
After a November 1972 vote, the new borough name became official on January 1, 1973.
Community life
Elmwood Park combines a dense residential population with a strong recreation culture, active municipal programming and a large school community. The Recreation Department operates from the complex at 500 Boulevard and supports youth sports, before- and after-care, summer camp, holiday programs and community activities.
