Helmetta is a compact Middlesex County borough of roughly 0.8 square miles with 2,455 residents at the 2020 Census. Its identity is closely tied to the G.W. Helme Snuff Mill Historic District, Helmetta Pond and the surrounding Jamesburg Park Conservation Area.
The borough was formed in 1888 from part of East Brunswick Township. Today it combines the preserved mill-town streetscape with modern housing, a small Main Street/Sutton Plaza business base, outdoor recreation and shared regional services.
Helmetta's mill-town story
The G.W. Helme Snuff Mill Historic District is listed on both the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. The district developed around the snuff mill, worker housing, churches, railroad and Helmetta Pond, preserving an unusually coherent example of a late-19th-century company town.
The former mill complex has been adapted into residential use as Lofts at Helmetta, preserving major portions of the industrial architecture while adding apartments and townhomes. That reuse makes the mill both Helmetta's defining historic landmark and a central part of the borough's current housing landscape.
