Kingwood developed from the western Hunterdon countryside in the colonial era and became one of New Jersey's original incorporated townships in 1798. The community's history is tied to farming, small crossroads settlements and the Delaware River. Local tradition also connects Kingwood resident Captain Daniel Bray with the collection of boats used for George Washington's Delaware River crossing during the Revolutionary War.
