Pequannock Township is a compact Morris County community with two official postal communities—Pequannock and Pompton Plains. Newark-Pompton Turnpike and Route 23 form the township's commercial spine, while residential neighborhoods, parks, lakes, river corridors, schools and major healthcare facilities give the community a broader regional role.

Pequannock is one of Morris County's oldest municipalities, created in 1740. Today's township combines that history with Chilton Medical Center, Cedar Crest, five public schools, an active recreation system and a busy Route 23 business corridor.

A Township with Deep Roots

The name Pequannock comes from a Lenape word associated with cleared or cultivated land. The area formed part of the Pompton Patent purchased in the late 1600s, and European settlement followed along the river valley. Pequannock Township was created on March 25, 1740 and originally covered a vast portion of northern Morris County.

King's HighwayToday's Newark-Pompton Turnpike follows an old travel corridor historically known as King's Highway.

Revolutionary WarContinental Army movement crossed the township, and Rochambeau's French army camped in Pompton Plains in 1781 while traveling to and from Yorktown.

Township ParentJefferson, Rockaway, Boonton, Montville, Butler, Riverdale, Kinnelon, Lincoln Park and other communities were carved from the much larger early Pequannock Township.

MuseumThe Museum of Pequannock Township occupies the historic Pompton Plains Railroad Station at 33 Evans Place and reopened after renovation in 2025.
