History & identity

Saddle River's landscape still reflects its beginnings as a rural river-valley community. Early settlement was largely agricultural, with Dutch and German influences, and farmsteads developing along East and West Saddle River Roads.

1700s

Farmsteads developed through the Saddle River Valley, with agriculture shaping the road pattern and early settlement.

1800s

Fruit and vegetable farming expanded, with local growers supplying New York markets and supporting related trades.

1894

Saddle River incorporated as a borough on November 22 from portions of Orvil Township during Bergen County's borough-formation era.

Today

Large residential properties, mature tree cover, the river corridor and preserved historic resources continue to define the borough.

Historic preservation remains a defining part of Saddle River. The borough's planning documents describe the Saddle River Center Historic District as a concentration of historic buildings around East Allendale Road and West Saddle River Road, with 27 principal historic buildings identified in the district inventory.

Historic places & architecture

Saddle River has an exceptional concentration of historically recognized houses, institutional buildings and landscapes. Several properties were listed through the Saddle River Multiple Resource Area, and the borough maintains a Landmarks Commission and historic-preservation regulations.

Community, business & daily life

Saddle River is much more residential than commercial. Its small business and institutional base is concentrated around the historic center and a limited number of professional, healthcare, retail and service locations rather than a large downtown shopping district.

Borough Hall, Wandell School, places of worship and a small number of local businesses form the community's most recognizable civic cluster.

Large-lot neighborhoods

Wooded residential streets and estate-scale properties shape most of Saddle River's built environment.

Local services

Professional offices, healthcare, home services, personal services and specialty businesses operate in town, with broader shopping available in surrounding municipalities.

Food & Drink

Saddle River has a limited in-town dining inventory compared with larger Bergen municipalities, so the NJTGO dining page focuses on verified establishments actually located within the borough.

Places of worship

St. Gabriel the Archangel and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church are among the established religious institutions in the borough.

Regional access

Residents are close to Route 17 and to rail stations in neighboring northwest Bergen communities, while Saddle River itself remains largely residential.
