From Matawan Township to Aberdeen
The community was known as Matawan Township until residents voted on November 8, 1977 to adopt the name Aberdeen Township, creating a clearer identity separate from neighboring Matawan Borough. Today the township includes several distinct neighborhoods and commercial corridors rather than one traditional downtown.
