Garage & yard sales in Allendale
Allendale regulates garage, yard, estate, rummage and similar casual sales. A Borough garage-sale license is generally required before conducting an advertised residential sale.
The Borough code currently sets the garage-sale license fee at $10.
The written application must be filed with the Borough Clerk at least five days before the sale begins.
No more than two garage sales may be conducted at the same dwelling or parcel during a calendar year.
Garage sales may be conducted only between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
A single license may cover no more than three consecutive calendar days.
The issued license must be prominently displayed at the property throughout the sale.
Items cannot be purchased or brought onto the premises specifically for resale under the residential garage-sale rules.
The Borough approved the Allendale Woman's Club annual Town-Wide Garage Sale for Sunday, October 4, 2026. Participants in the Borough-approved event do not need a separate individual garage-sale license, although the other garage-sale rules still apply.
The code provides that a sale held as part of an approved Borough-wide sale still counts toward the maximum of two garage sales at the same property in a calendar year.
The garage-sale chapter does not apply when a person advertises five or fewer specifically named or described personal-property items.
Lost pets & animal notices
A community post can help reunite a lost pet, but owners should also use Allendale's official animal-control and public-safety channels.
Allendale requires both dogs and cats to be licensed. Current rabies documentation is required for registration.
Allendale contracts with Tyco Animal Control for stray animals, injured or sick wildlife, animal bites, aggressive animals and wildlife posing an immediate safety concern.
For animal emergencies after normal business hours, weekends or holidays, contact the Allendale Police Department at 201-825-1900.
Marketplace & transaction safety
For portable items, use a well-lit public meeting location when practical rather than immediately giving a stranger your home address.
For higher-value transactions or home pickups, consider having another adult present and tell someone where the transaction is taking place.
Do not publish Social Security numbers, banking information, identity documents or unnecessary household details.
For vehicles, electronics and high-value property, verify title, ownership or serial-number information before completing the transaction.
Be suspicious of overpayment checks, gift-card requests, cryptocurrency demands and unusual refund arrangements.
Pressure to ignore normal precautions, unexpected changes to the meeting plan or requests for sensitive information are reasons to end the transaction.
How to prepare a useful classified
“Oak dining table — West Crescent area” is more useful than simply “For sale.”
Include condition, size, age, quantity, model and important defects or missing parts.
Use a general Allendale location rather than publishing an exact home address.
State an asking price, “free,” “wanted,” or whether reasonable offers will be considered.
Provide only the contact method needed to arrange the transaction.
Once an item is sold, found or no longer available, ask NJTGO to remove the listing.
What NJTGO classifieds will not accept
To keep the marketplace appropriate for a local town-guide audience, NJTGO may reject, edit or remove listings that are unsafe, unlawful, deceptive or better suited to another section.
- Firearms, ammunition or weapon sales
- Explosives or hazardous materials
- Illegal drugs or controlled substances
- Prescription medication
- Alcohol, tobacco, vaping or nicotine products
- Counterfeit or stolen goods
- Recalled or known-dangerous consumer products
- Scams, pyramid schemes or deceptive offers
- Discriminatory housing or roommate language

Submitting an Allendale classified
A useful submission should include a concise title, category, accurate description, general Allendale location, asking price if applicable and a safe contact method. Garage-sale notices should also include dates, hours and rain information.
Give enough detail for another resident to decide whether the item or notice is relevant.
The listing should have a genuine Allendale connection and should not be bulk commercial advertising disguised as a personal post.
Tell NJTGO when an item is sold, a pet is found or a notice has expired.
Businesses and enhanced promotion
Classifieds are intended for community-scale personal listings. Businesses, employers, real-estate professionals and organizations seeking recurring or enhanced promotion can use paid NJTGO placements with stronger presentation and direct website links.
