Belleville Overview
Belleville occupies the northeastern edge of Essex County along the Passaic River. It borders Nutley to the north, Bloomfield to the west and Newark to the south, while the river separates Belleville from Bergen County communities to the east. Its location places residents close to Newark and major northern New Jersey employment centers while retaining a strong neighborhood identity of its own.
History & Industrial Heritage
Belleville's roots reach back to the Dutch settlement known as Second River. The name Belleville emerged in the late eighteenth century, and the community became a separate township in 1839. Water access and water power helped turn the area into an early center of American industry.
Belleville's river location supported mills, metalworking, engine works, shipbuilding and other manufacturing activity well before the modern industrial era.
Wire used for Samuel Morse's early experimental telegraph line between Washington and Baltimore was manufactured in Belleville.
George Washington and Continental troops passed through the area in November 1776. Revolutionary War veterans are buried in the historic Dutch Reformed Church cemetery.
