About Bernardsville
From Vealtown to Bernardsville
The community was known as Vealtown before the name Bernardsville came into use in the 19th century. Rail service beginning in the 1870s helped transform the area into a country retreat and commuter community.
Bernardsville became a separate borough in 1924 after being part of Bernards Township.
A Somerset Hills center
Downtown activity centers on Olcott Square, Mine Brook Road, Claremont Road and Morristown Road/Route 202. The borough also contains large wooded residential areas, preserved lands and historic estates.
