Water is one of Brick's defining features. The township includes extensive frontage along the Metedeconk River, Barnegat Bay and connected lagoons, plus municipal oceanfront properties on the barrier island east of the mainland.

Beach-name distinction: Brick's municipal barrier-island properties are Brick Beaches I, II and III. They are separate from the similarly named Ocean Beach communities farther south in Toms River's Dover Beaches North area.

Brick Township History
Brick Township was created in 1850, the same year Ocean County was established. The township was named for Joseph W. Brick, owner of the Bergen Iron Works on the Metedeconk River. Early Brick was much larger than today's municipality and once included territory that later became several neighboring shore communities.
Before 1850Indigenous people used the area's rivers, bays, forests and shore resources long before permanent European settlement. Later communities developed around farming, fishing, shipbuilding, timber and iron production.
1850Brick Township was created from portions of Dover and Howell Townships as Ocean County itself was being formed.
Late 1800s to 1920Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, Lakewood, Mantoloking and Point Pleasant were among the municipalities created from territory that had once been part of Brick.
Mid-20th CenturyGarden State Parkway access and rapid residential development transformed Brick from a largely rural and seasonal shore community into a major year-round suburb.
