Known as the “Township of Lakes,” Byram combines lake communities, wooded neighborhoods, Route 206 businesses and some of Sussex County’s best-known historic and outdoor destinations. Its Stanhope mailing addresses can be confusing, but the township itself stretches well beyond Stanhope Borough.

History
Byram Township was created in 1798 from portions of the former Newton Township. The community had earlier been known as Lockwood and took the Byram name from the family of Jephthah Byram, early settlers in the area. The township’s history is closely tied to farming, iron and charcoal production, the Morris Canal and the lake communities that developed across its wooded landscape.
Waterloo became one of the township’s defining historic places. The village grew along the Morris Canal and today preserves a canal-era landscape of homes, businesses, a church and other structures within the state park system.

Lakes & Water
Byram’s lake landscape includes Cranberry Lake, Panther Lake, Lake Lackawanna, Lake Mohawk, Tomahawk Lake, Jefferson Lake, Forest Lake, Roseville and other smaller lakes and ponds. Access rules vary: several are private or member-only, while public recreation is available in township and state-managed areas.
Check posted rules before swimming, launching a boat or fishing. Lake access, beach privileges and watercraft rules differ by lake and community.

Waterloo Village Historic Site

Grounds are generally open dawn to dusk. State-run tours and the visitor center operate on seasonal schedules.
Amity School
The one-room Amity School dates to 1840 and served local students for nearly a century. It remains part of Byram’s early community history.
Community & Recreation
Byram’s Recreation Department coordinates seasonal programs and activities, and the township maintains a network of parks and trails. The Byram Senior Citizen Club meets twice monthly and organizes luncheons and outings for residents age 55 and older.
Wild West City

Although the postal address says Stanhope, Wild West City is in Byram Township. The attraction operates seasonally; confirm the current calendar before visiting.
Waterloo United Methodist Church
Located within the Waterloo Village area. The congregation is part of the historic village setting and remains active in the community.
