About Clinton
Clinton developed around water-powered industry on the South Branch of the Raritan River. The community took the name Clinton in the nineteenth century and was incorporated as a town in 1865. Today, the compact center combines historic architecture, locally owned shops, restaurants, museums, river views and neighborhood streets within a highly walkable core.
The town’s most recognized landmarks sit across the river from one another: the Red Mill Museum Village and the stone mill that houses the Hunterdon Art Museum.

Red Mill Museum Village
56 Main Street. A historic museum complex centered on the circa-1810 Red Mill, with quarry structures, a schoolhouse, log cabin, blacksmith shop, exhibits and seasonal programs.
Hunterdon Art Museum
7 Lower Center Street. Contemporary art, craft and design exhibitions presented inside a nineteenth-century stone mill on the river.
Main Street
Clinton’s historic commercial heart, with independent shops, dining, services and easy access to both museums and the bridge.
South Branch Riverfront
Views of the river, dam and mills give Clinton its signature landscape and connect the downtown to walking and recreation.
Landsdown Trail
A local trail connection begins near the Fox Lumber area. Visitors should use public parking in town and follow current trail rules.
Hunts Mill & Community Parks
Local recreation includes Hunts Mill Park, the Clinton Community Center area and the Dunham Park section of the South Branch Reservation.

High School Choice
Students who attend Clinton Public School may choose either North Hunterdon High School in Annandale or Voorhees High School in Glen Gardner.

Historic Clinton
Red Mill
The earliest section dates to around 1810 and served changing industrial uses including wool, grist, graphite and talc before becoming a museum landmark.
Stone Mill / Hunterdon Art Museum
The mill site has roots reaching into the eighteenth century. The building became an arts center in the twentieth century and remains one of Clinton’s defining historic structures.
Surrounding Municipalities
Clinton Township surrounds much of the town and is separate from the Town of Clinton. Franklin Township and Union Township are also nearby. Always use the municipality—not simply a Clinton 08809 mailing address—when determining which NJTGO directory a business belongs in.
