Deptford traces its organized township history to the late 1600s. Its original footprint was far larger than today's municipality; over time, portions became communities including Woodbury, West Deptford, Wenonah, Westville, Woodbury Heights and Washington Township.
On January 9, 1793, French aeronaut Jean-Pierre Blanchard launched from Philadelphia in a flight witnessed by President George Washington. After about 46 minutes aloft, Blanchard landed in what is now Deptford Township. The event and the historic Clement Oak area remain part of the township's identity.
The opening of Deptford Mall in 1975 transformed the township into a regional shopping destination. The mall remains the anchor of a much larger commercial district that now includes several major shopping centers and hotels.
