Elsinboro is a small, largely agricultural and residential township on the Delaware River and Salem River. Its Salem, NJ 08079 mailing address can be confusing: Elsinboro Township is a separate municipality from Salem City, even though many township addresses use “Salem” as the postal city.

History Along the Delaware

Elsinboro's shoreline is tied to the New Sweden era. Fort Nya Elfsborg was established in 1643 under Governor Johan Printz and was later abandoned in 1651. The area also carries earlier English-settlement history associated with Fort Elsinboro. Historic markers along Salem–Fort Elfsborg Road help interpret this early colonial landscape.

Fort Elfsborg

The Swedish fort once guarded traffic on the Delaware River. The historic site is associated with the riverfront near present-day Elsinboro Point.
