History

Hampton Township was created in 1864 from portions of Sussex County communities and was named for Jonathan Hampton, whose donation of land to the Episcopal Church of Newton influenced the name chosen by state legislator Robert Hamilton. Part of Hampton was later used to form Fredon Township in 1904.

The township developed as a rural agricultural community, while its southern Route 206 corridor grew into one of Sussex County’s important retail and automotive-service areas.
