From the “Beehive of Industry” to a Transit Town
Harrison was established in 1840 and became a major manufacturing center whose factories included RCA, Crucible Steel, Otis Elevator, Hyatt Roller Bearing and Edison-related operations. Industrial decline left large redevelopment sites south of I-280. Since the late 1990s, the waterfront strategy has used the Passaic River, PATH station and former industrial acreage to create housing, parks, entertainment and mixed-use development.
Harrison today: the established residential town north of I-280 and the rapidly growing PATH/waterfront district are both essential parts of the community.

Harrison Station is on PATH's Newark–World Trade Center service pattern. Newark Penn Station is immediately across the river for NJ TRANSIT rail, Amtrak, Newark Light Rail and additional buses. I-280 crosses Harrison and connects to the New Jersey Turnpike and regional highways.
