Welcome to Hopatcong Borough
Hopatcong occupies much of the western shore of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey’s largest lake. The borough combines waterfront neighborhoods, wooded hills, marinas, local restaurants, nearly 19 miles of municipal and regional trails, and a year-round community shaped by the lake.

History
Hopatcong’s story closely follows the development of Lake Hopatcong. The natural lake was enlarged during the Morris Canal era and later became a major hotel and excursion destination. Over time, the resort landscape evolved into summer-home communities and then into today’s year-round borough.
The borough’s history also includes Lenape heritage, the industrial and inventive work of Hudson Maxim, and surviving sites associated with the lake’s hotel and recreation era.

Trails
Hopatcong maintains and connects to roughly 19 miles of trails. The Lake Hopatcong Trail runs largely through the borough, while about nine miles of the regional Highlands Trail cross the borough’s western greenbelt.
Cowboy Creek Loop
About 2 miles through the Hopatcong Heights area, accessible from Veterans Park.
Brooklyn Mountain Loop
About 3 miles through the Brooklyn Mountain Greenway.
Mountain Inlet Loop
About 1 mile through the Mohawk–North Shore Greenway and Mountain Inlet Sanctuary area.
Highlands Trail
Regional long-distance trail crossing the borough’s western wooded landscape.
Lake Life
Boating, paddling, fishing, waterfront dining and marina activity are central to Hopatcong Borough. The western shore includes residential coves, local marinas and businesses serving lake residents and boaters.
Boundary note: “Lake Hopatcong” is a regional destination spanning several municipalities. Businesses on Nolan’s Point and Route 181 are generally in Jefferson Township, while Hopatcong State Park at 260 Lakeside Boulevard is in Roxbury Township. NJTGO keeps those municipalities separate from Hopatcong Borough.
