Lafayette is a rural Sussex County township where farmland and open space meet one of northwest New Jersey’s best-known antique and specialty-shopping districts. Lafayette uses New Jersey’s township form of government with a five-member Township Committee. Municipal services include clerk/registrar, tax offices, land use, zoning, public works, recreation, fire prevention and emergency services.

Lafayette Township was incorporated in 1845 and is identified by the township as the first municipality in the United States named for the Marquis de Lafayette. Its history reflects farming, milling, transportation and the growth of a small crossroads community along the Paulins Kill.
The historic shopping district preserves several 19th-century buildings, including the mill complex, stone structures and the Ludlum-Mabee House area along Route 15.
