Lower Alloways Creek occupies the southwestern edge of Salem County along the Delaware Bay and lower Alloways Creek. Much of the township is water, tidal marsh or open land, giving it a very different character from New Jersey's denser suburban communities.
Hancocks Bridge & Revolutionary War History
Hancocks Bridge takes its name from the Hancock family and the early bridge across Alloways Creek. Its best-known landmark is the Hancock House, a patterned-brick Quaker house built in 1734 by William and Sarah Hancock.
On March 21, 1778, Major John Graves Simcoe and the Queen's Rangers attacked the occupants during the Revolutionary War. The event became known as the Hancock House Massacre.
