Mantua Township sits near the center of Gloucester County and combines established neighborhoods, preserved open space, active parks, historic community centers and busy commercial corridors. The township covers about 15.9 square miles and includes areas commonly addressed as Mantua, Sewell and Barnsboro.

History & Heritage
Mantua Township was formerly part of Greenwich Township. The New Jersey Legislature created Mantua Township on February 23, 1853, and the first township meeting was held March 9, 1853 at the Union School House at Carpenter's Landing. The township name is associated with Mantua Creek, historically important for travel, commerce and settlement.

The Historical Commission preserves local photographs, documents, artifacts, family histories and community records. The museum is generally open Saturday mornings or by appointment.

Edelman Fossil Park & Museum
The Edelman Fossil Park & Museum of Rowan University is one of Mantua Township's defining visitor attractions. Built at a former marl quarry, the museum combines hands-on fossil discovery with exhibits about the Cretaceous world, extinction, climate and science. Township records report more than 86,000 guests in its first ten months of public operation.
