Built around 1800, the Phoenix House is a notable Federal-style landmark at 2 West Main Street. Once an inn and boarding house, it was donated to the Borough in 1938 and today serves as Mendham Borough’s municipal hall.

The Borough lies about 5.4 miles west of Morristown and approximately 40 miles west of Midtown Manhattan. Its central village grew along the old Washington Turnpike, today’s Main Street, and much of that historic streetscape remains central to Mendham’s character.
History & Historic Landmarks
Mendham’s village story reaches back to the early 18th century. The Borough was incorporated in 1906 after separating from Mendham Township, but many of the buildings that define the center of town predate the municipality by generations.
Black Horse Inn
A defining Mendham landmark dating to the 1740s, the Black Horse has roots in the village’s stagecoach era and remains one of the most recognizable buildings at the Main Street crossroads.
Hilltop Church
The present Hilltop Presbyterian Church dates to 1860 and stands near an earlier congregation site with deep Revolutionary-era associations, reinforcing the historic character of the Hilltop Road area.
Mendham Historic District
The historic district follows the Main Street corridor and includes a broad collection of residential, religious and commercial properties illustrating Mendham’s development from its early settlement through the early 20th century.
St. Mark’s Church
Dating to the 1870s, St. Mark’s is one of the village center’s key historic buildings and a strong example of Carpenter Gothic architecture.

Borough Park
Between Mountain Avenue, Park Avenue and Orchard Street, Borough Park is the community’s active recreation hub with ball fields, turf fields, tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, a gazebo and the Carriage House.
Mountain Valley Park Pond
At 72 Mountain Avenue, the pond—locally known as the “Mud Hole”—offers fishing, a firepit area and direct access to Patriots’ Path, with playgrounds and Pastime Fields nearby.
India Brook Park
At 270 Mountainside Road, India Brook Park offers open green space, preserved natural areas and hiking trails that follow the brook and connect toward additional open space in Mendham Township.
Patriots’ Path
Morris County’s trail system passes through the Borough, with local access at Mountain Valley Park Pond, India Brook Park and near Cold Hill Road.
Botti Fields
The West Main Street recreation area provides fields and a pavilion used for local sports and community activities.
