About Montgomery Township
Montgomery stretches from the Sourland Mountain area toward the Millstone River and includes a mix of preserved farmland, residential neighborhoods, historic crossroads, business districts and natural areas. The township itself notes that it can be difficult to find on maps because local mailing addresses commonly use Skillman, Belle Mead, Blawenburg and Princeton rather than “Montgomery.” Historic village names also include Bridgepoint, Dutchtown and Harlingen.
The area was historically part of Somerset County's Western Precinct and was organized as Montgomery Township in 1798. The township is named for Revolutionary War officer Richard Montgomery. George Washington and the Continental Army crossed the area several times during the Revolution.
Municipal-boundary note: A “Princeton” mailing address does not necessarily mean a property is in Princeton municipality. Several Route 206 and Wall Street businesses use a Princeton postal address while operating within Montgomery Township. NJTGO uses municipal location—not mailing city alone—when organizing listings.
