Montville Township's three sections share one municipal government and school district, but each contributes something different to the township's identity.
From Uyle-Kill to Montville
Montville's recorded European settlement reaches back to Dutch farmers in the early 18th century, when the creek valley was known as Uyle-Kill or “Owl-Kill.” Route 202 developed from the early road that connected farms with local mills and tanneries.
During the American Revolution, the township lay along an important military route between Morristown and the Hudson River. George Washington stayed in the Towaco area in June 1780, and Rochambeau's French forces later passed through on the route toward Yorktown.
The name Montville developed from the Mandeville Inn, while construction of the Morris Canal helped shape Towaco and the township's 19th-century growth. Montville was formally incorporated from Pequannock Township in 1867.

Montville Township is served by NJ Transit's Montclair-Boonton Line at Towaco Station on Route 202. The station provides parking, accessible spaces, bike racks and a ticket vending machine. Rail access complements the township's road connections to Interstate 287, Route 80, Route 46 and Route 202.
