National Park is a compact Gloucester County borough on the Delaware River, best known for Fort Mercer, the 1777 Battle of Red Bank, the James & Ann Whitall House, and a close-knit residential community just south of Woodbury.

History & Identity
National Park's story is closely tied to the Delaware River and the American Revolution. Fort Mercer was established here in 1777 as part of the American defense of Philadelphia. On October 22, 1777, Continental forces under Colonel Christopher Greene repelled a Hessian assault during the Battle of Red Bank.
The battlefield area is preserved today as Red Bank Battlefield Park, where visitors can see the fort earthworks, monuments, river views and the James & Ann Whitall House, an 18th-century home associated with the battlefield story.
In the late 19th century the area was promoted as National Park on the Delaware, a Methodist resort and retreat community. National Park became a borough in 1902 from part of West Deptford Township.
