History & Local Identity
Newfield's municipal history centers on the community's successful effort to separate from Franklin Township in 1924. The borough's own history records that 240 residents traveled by special train to Trenton on February 19, 1924 to petition for incorporation. State lawmakers approved the effort later that month, and the borough formally separated from Franklin Township in May 1924.
The early business district included neighborhood stores, barbers, a lunch counter, bakery and hardware store, while local industry included rug and rattan-furniture manufacturing. Today's borough retains a small-town center with a mix of residential streets, local services and light industrial activity.
