North Plainfield covers about 2.9 square miles in northeastern Somerset County. The borough combines established residential neighborhoods with two distinct commercial areas: the traditional Somerset Street corridor and the broad Route 22 business district.

North Plainfield operates under New Jersey’s Faulkner Act mayor-council form. Borough services include administration, clerk, finance and tax collection, construction, public works, health, zoning/property maintenance, recreation, police, fire/EMS and emergency management.
Education
The North Plainfield School District is the borough’s public PreK–12 district, with six district schools plus contracted preschool locations.

History & Historic Character
Before the borough carried its present name, the area was known as Blue Hills and was part of Warren Township. North Plainfield Township was created in 1872 and originally included what are now North Plainfield, Watchung and Green Brook. North Plainfield became a separate borough in the 1880s.
Washington Park Historic District preserves an important collection of late-19th-century residential architecture. Vermeule Mansion, a Greek Revival-era landmark on Greenbrook Road, is another key historic resource and is associated with the Fleetwood Camera Museum and community arts activity.

Local civic and service organizations include veterans’ organizations, youth sports, scouting groups, Friends of Vermeule Mansion, the Washington Park Association, the Vermeule Arts Center and other borough and county-supported groups.
Getting Around
Route 22 crosses the borough and provides direct access toward the regional highway network. Routes 78 and 287 are nearby. North Plainfield does not have its own NJ Transit rail station, but the Plainfield, Netherwood and Dunellen stations on the Raritan Valley Line are nearby options. Local and regional bus service also uses the Route 22 corridor.
