History, Architecture & Public Art

Roosevelt began as Jersey Homesteads, a Depression-era cooperative community designed around housing, farming, industry and shared civic life. The borough’s original residences and Garden City-inspired plan are a defining part of its identity, and the Jersey Homesteads Historic District encompasses the community.

Ben Shahn MuralThe 1937–38 mural inside Roosevelt Public School is one of the community’s signature works. The school is an active public school, so visitors should not assume walk-in access; public access is best sought through announced tours or special events.
FDR Memorial & School AreaThe school/civic area is the best starting point for understanding the planned community and its New Deal story.
Roosevelt Arts ProjectFounded in 1986, the local arts organization presents visual art, music, poetry, drama and collaborative work by Roosevelt-area artists.
Weekend in Old MonmouthThe Roosevelt Borough / Jersey Homesteads Historic District continues to appear among Monmouth County’s participating historic sites.
