The Borough of Roselle

A close-knit Union County borough with an important place in electrical history

Roselle combines established residential neighborhoods, a compact commercial core, community institutions and easy access to larger employment and transportation corridors in central Union County. The borough is especially known for an 1883 milestone in the early development of electric lighting.

Historic first: On January 19, 1883, Thomas Edison’s first village electric-lighting system using overhead wires began service in Roselle. The community is widely recognized in New Jersey history as the first village lighted by electricity.

Roselle’s Edison Connection

The borough’s electrical-history story is central to Roselle’s identity. In 1883, an Edison village distribution system began operating here. The Presbyterian church at West 5th Avenue and Chestnut Street is also associated with the community’s pioneering use of electric light.
