History in brief
The community developed along the Raritan River and was long associated with clay deposits and brickmaking, especially Sayre & Fisher. The municipality originated in the nineteenth century and later became the Borough of Sayreville. The name honors James R. Sayre Jr., associated with the local brick industry.
