History & Local Character
Sea Girt was incorporated as a borough in 1917 after developing as a shore community in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its identity is unusually concentrated: ocean beach and boardwalk to the east, the historic lighthouse near Beacon Boulevard, a largely residential grid, the Washington Boulevard commercial cluster and the National Guard Training Center on the borough's western side.
Municipal-Boundary Note
Many businesses along Route 35 advertise a Sea Girt, NJ 08750 mailing address even though their physical location is in Wall Township. NJTGO treats municipal location—not postal branding—as controlling. Route 35 shopping centers and restaurants are therefore labeled as nearby/outside Sea Girt when included.
