Historic villages, preserved farmland, wooded hills, equestrian country and the distinctive Oldwick center give this northeastern Hunterdon County township a strongly rural identity.
Place-name and boundary note: Oldwick and Mountainville are within Tewksbury Township. Califon is a separate borough, although many Tewksbury properties use a Califon mailing address. Pottersville and Cokesbury extend across municipal boundaries, so NJTGO identifies places by their actual township rather than postal name alone.
About Tewksbury Township
Tewksbury traces its early European settlement to the 1700s and became a township by Royal patent on March 11, 1755 after separating from Lebanon Township. Oldwick was historically known as New Germantown; the name changed during the World War I era. Mountainville, Pottersville, Fairmount and Cokesbury also contribute to the township's historic rural landscape.
Today Tewksbury covers about 31.7 square miles and had 5,870 residents in the 2020 Census. Forests, farms and preserved open space occupy much of the township, while small village centers provide local services without changing the area's low-density character.
