History & identity
Totowa was incorporated as a borough in 1898 after settlement in the area dating to the eighteenth century. The name is commonly associated with Indigenous language connected to the nearby Passaic River and falls. Today the town's identity mixes long-established residential blocks with a commercial and industrial tax base that is unusually large for a four-square-mile borough.
Useful distinction: Dey Mansion is often associated with “Totowa Road,” but the historic site at 199 Totowa Road is physically in Wayne, not Totowa. NJTGO lists it only as a nearby attraction on the visitor page.
