About Union Township
Union Township was incorporated on February 17, 1853 from part of Bethlehem Township. Its name comes from the Union Furnace ironworks established along Spruce Run in 1742. The furnace and related forge produced iron goods and supplied cannonballs during the Revolutionary War before the operation declined late in the 18th century.
The township combines very different landscapes: the I-78 and Route 173 travel corridor, residential neighborhoods near Clinton, historic rural settlements including Pattenburg and Norton, and extensive preserved land around Spruce Run Reservoir and the Clinton Wildlife Management Area.

The township's name comes from the Union Furnace iron operation established in 1742. The original furnace site was lost beneath the Spruce Run Reservoir, but the surrounding historic landscape remains important.
