Wanaque Borough is a suburban Highlands community made up of two principal sections: Wanaque, historically known as Midvale, and Haskell. Ringwood Avenue ties the borough together, carrying many of its restaurants, shops, professional services and neighborhood businesses.
The landscape shifts from compact Haskell neighborhoods and commercial corridors to the wooded hills, water resources and residential communities around Wanaque. The borough is also home to Lakeland Regional High School and sits beside major North Jersey open-space and reservoir lands.

Wanaque became an independent borough in 1918 when Pompton Township was divided into Wanaque, Bloomingdale and Ringwood. The borough's official history notes that Wanaque includes both Wanaque/Midvale and Haskell. Its modern character reflects a long relationship with local industry, the Ringwood Avenue corridor, the North Jersey Highlands and regional water resources.
