History & community
Washington Township was created from Deptford Township on February 17, 1836. The township briefly became part of Camden County when that county was formed in 1844, then returned to Gloucester County in 1871. Long-standing local communities include Grenloch, Hurffville, Cross Keys and Turnersville, while modern development has produced a broad mix of established neighborhoods, commercial centers, medical facilities and recreation.
The township’s 2020 Census population was 48,677, making Washington Township a major population and service center within Gloucester County.
