Willingboro in Burlington County
Willingboro sits in the Delaware Valley portion of Burlington County. The Township describes a 7.8-square-mile community bounded by the Route 130 corridor, Rancocas Creek, Westampton Township and Burlington Township. Its modern identity is closely tied to the large-scale Levitt development that transformed the community in the late 1950s and early 1960s, while the township itself traces its municipal roots to colonial-era Wellingborough.
The Route 130/Town Center area combines civic, retail, medical and service uses and remains one of the township’s primary commercial gateways.
Virtua Willingboro Hospital at 218A Sunset Road anchors a broad medical cluster with emergency, inpatient, outpatient and specialty care nearby.
NJ TRANSIT buses serve Willingboro Town Center and neighborhood stops. Current service includes the 409 and 417, with 418 express trips also serving Town Center.
History: Wellingborough to Willingboro
The township’s official history traces Wellingborough to 1688, when it was incorporated under English colonial law as one of Burlington County’s original townships. The municipality once covered a much larger area, including places that later became Beverly, Edgewater Park, Delanco and Rancocas Village. In the twentieth century, Levitt & Sons acquired large tracts of farmland and rapidly built the planned suburban community that defines much of Willingboro’s street and neighborhood pattern today.
English Quaker settlement in West Jersey and the nearby City of Burlington shaped the region before Wellingborough’s formal incorporation.
The late-1950s Levitt development created thousands of homes, curving residential streets, neighborhood sections and a new suburban population center.
The Willingboro Public Library maintains a local-history room, making the Town Center library an important starting point for community research.
Parks, Lakes & Recreation
Willingboro has a notably large municipal recreation system. The Township identifies more than 178 acres in its four principal parks—Millcreek, Broido, Fairmount and Crystal Lake—plus the two-lake Willingboro Lakes Nature Preserve and a much broader network of fields, playgrounds, pools and neighborhood recreation spaces.
429 John F. Kennedy Way. A major community complex with gym space, recreation programming, track and field facilities, baseball, football, arts spaces and community events on roughly 40 acres.
Twin Hills area. Walking and bike paths, exercise trails, wooded areas, playgrounds, dog park and an outdoor bandshell. The park also has an inclusive playground.
Industrial Drive area. A public lake and nature setting used for fishing, walking and quiet outdoor recreation.

The Willingboro Public Library is a major civic anchor at 220 Willingboro Parkway in the Town Center. The current building opened in 2003 and reused part of a former Woolworth structure. The Township describes a roughly 42,000-square-foot facility with public computers, a computer-training center, local-history room, meeting rooms, exhibit space, children’s reading garden and café.
Willingboro Public Schools
The district serves early childhood through high school, with a current district realignment that places most pre-K students at J. Cresswell Stuart, K–3 students at Hawthorne Park, Twin Hills and W.R. James, grades 4–5 at James A. Cotten, grades 6–8 at Memorial Middle School and grades 9–12 at Willingboro High School. Garfield East also serves early-childhood/elementary programming, and the Alternative School at Bookbinder serves eligible students.
