Manchester Township is the municipality. Whiting is a historic and widely recognized section of Manchester with its own strong local identity, including the Whiting postal name, schools, fire company, Reading Center, senior-services location, Bowker Field and Harry Wright Lake.

History, Aviation & the Pinelands

Manchester Township was incorporated on April 6, 1865 from part of Dover Township, now Toms River Township. William Torrey named the new municipality for Manchester, England. The only major boundary change came in 1921 when Lakehurst became a separate borough.

1937 · Hindenburg DisasterThe Hindenburg was destroyed by fire while attempting to moor at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, a site now associated with Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
Modern ManchesterPostwar development, active-adult communities, Pinelands preservation and extensive open space transformed Manchester into one of Ocean County's largest residential communities.
Aviation-history note: the Lakehurst side of today's Joint Base retains nationally important lighter-than-air and naval-aviation history. Access to active military installations is controlled; visitors should use current official tour or visitor procedures rather than treating the site as an unrestricted attraction.
