Roxbury's six communities
Roxbury Township is commonly understood through six distinct community names rather than one central downtown. Mailing addresses can vary, but these areas together make up the Township.
A major commercial and historic area where Routes 10 and 46 meet, with Morris Canal resources, the King Canal Store and the Ledgewood Historic District.
Lake-oriented neighborhoods on and near the southern end of Lake Hopatcong, with rail access, Landing Park and strong connections to the lake's recreation history.

Roxbury has unusually strong regional access for a suburban township. Interstate 80, U.S. 46, U.S. 206 and Route 10 connect its neighborhoods and business districts to Dover, Mount Olive, Randolph, Parsippany and the wider North Jersey region.

From colonial township to canal and lake crossroads
Roxbury's history is unusually visible. The Township contains four municipal historic preservation districts, major Morris Canal resources, early houses and churches, and transportation landmarks tied to the development of Lake Hopatcong.
1740Roxbury Township was established on December 24, 1740, from a much larger tract that once included land later divided into several present-day municipalities.
1798Roxbury was formally incorporated as a New Jersey township in the state's first municipal incorporation period.
1820s–1830sThe Morris Canal transformed Ledgewood and the Lake Hopatcong area, bringing freight, stores, canal structures and new commercial activity.
Rail eraRail service helped turn Lake Hopatcong into a major resort destination; the historic Landing railroad station remains an important reminder of that era.
